Canadian Truck Driver Shortage
The Canadian Truck Driver Shortage is the shortage of available truck drivers to keep the Canadian economy moving. A very real threat to the Canadian and Saskatchewan way of life, the for-hire truck driver shortage is a nation wide issue that requires ongoing advocacy and extensive study to correct.
The Saskatchewan Trucking Association has been at the forefront of acknowledging, analyzing and attempting to shorten the truck driver supply gap both provincially and federally. The STA uses multiple media platforms to promote the industry and the key role it plays in the Canadian supply chain. From addressing and dispelling multiple myths about working in the industry to supporting Member companies on recruitment and retention, the STA is helping to close the gap to protect the industry, the Saskatchewan way of life and the Canadian economy.
Canadian Trucking Alliance Blue Ribbon Task Force
The Blue Ribbon Task Force is the Canadian Trucking Alliance’s response to the chronic truck driver shortage in Canada. The task force was comprised of trucking company executives from across Canada, including STA Board Member, Glen Ertell. The task force has helped produced two publications on the driver shortage:

Canada could experience a shortage of 25,000 to 33,000 for-hire truck drivers by 2020, disrupting not only the trucking industry but the Canadian economy and ultimately affecting the well-being of consumers as well.
The findings reflect what the industry has been warning for years – that Canada is on the cusp of a serious shortage of truck driver capacity, which, considering all goods produced are delivered in part by truck, could hamper the Canadian supply chain and drive up prices on store shelves.

Canada is facing a challenge as a result of its aging workforce. This challenge is particularly acute for the for-hire trucking industry, as workers in its key occupation—truck drivers—are aging significantly more rapidly than the rest of the workforce. This challenge is affecting and will continue to affect, other industries since all of the goods that we produce and consume in Canada are delivered in part by truck. This report quantifies the expected gap between the supply and demand for truck drivers in the for-hire trucking industry and puts this into the context of the economic importance of the trucking industry.Improvements in the movement of goods will have a direct impact on the well-being of individuals. Given that trucks play a part in delivering most of the food that we eat, the leisure goods that we enjoy, and the roofs under which we live, the current challenges faced by the trucking industry are a concern for all Canadians.
