Job Description

Do you enjoy putting together a plan and making it happen? Do you enjoy finding solutions to challenges? Do you like doing what some people say can not be done?

Ghost Transportation Services is looking for a Fleet Operations Manager. This position is based in Saskatoon. What is a Fleet Operations Manager? You are in charge of “the trucks.” You have to look after every aspect. Are they doing the freight they need to be doing? Is everything running efficiently? Are drivers making money? Are the trucks running properly and being maintained the right way so they are not breaking down on the road? Do we have enough trailers and the proper amount? You have to dispatch when staff is on holiday, away sick, at a seminar. And you have to make sure it is profitable. You are the one that is responsible for the operation.

So what do we need?

You have to lead and manage staff. Both drivers and dispatchers. Hire, train, mentor, develop, discipline and if need be fire.

You need to be able to jump in and do the work yourself as well. Dispatch drivers, talk to customers, cover off all aspects of the asset operation.

While you don’t need to be able to rebuild and engine using a pocket knife and a piece of gum, you do need to be able to ask questions, talk to those that can trouble shoot and make good maintenance decisions.

You have to figure out processes, appreciate their need and know when to go outside of them, and take the heat for doing so. You also have to question the process and see if it can be made better.

You have to deal with current customers, grow their business and develop new business.

You have to understand nickels and dimes along with hundred dollar bills.

We need someone that is respectful, considerate and self aware of their own shortfalls.

You have to look at things in a new way, do things we haven’t done before and not be afraid to screw up.

Because you will.

You have to be willing to learn and grow yourself.

And computer skills are necessary. It is 2021, but wow, there are still a lot of people who don’t know how email works or can’t remember their password.

Benefits?

Yes we are willing to pay you for this. We even have a health plan.

And we want you to have fun doing this. Every day may not be a glorious event, but overall, it will be a good time. It is not a Monday to Friday 8-5 job. Stuff will occur after “normal banker’s hour.” But not always. Trucks move at night, or over weekends. But set up properly, the “extra-curricular” calls are a minimum.

If you have read this posting and thought “This is absurd, I can’t believe they made a posting like this, I would never apply here!”, then good it worked.  We wouldn’t have hired you anyway. It’s you, not us.

But if you read this and think “I can make a go of this!” then apply.  If you truly can do the job. Because we will find out.

So why should I apply? Because there is no greater opportunity than this position. You can grow the fleet. You can increase the operation. You can add more people. You can then reap the rewards.

Yes, it will be a challenge. But nothing worthwhile comes easy.
