The trucking industry in Canada is facing tremendous economic and operational challenges. Beyond the pressures of inflation and rising costs, unethical practices by some carriers—such as misclassified workers, tax evasion, and immigration fraud—continue to undermine our industry. A lack of robust federal regulatory oversight has allowed these behaviors to grow unchecked, threatening not only legitimate businesses but also the integrity of our entire supply chain commented Rob Ruiters, Board Chair for the Saskatchewan Trucking Association.
Trucking is the backbone of Saskatchewan’s export-driven economy. Our industry plays a critical role in ensuring the movement of goods for key sectors like agriculture, oil & gas, manufacturing, and mining. These industries rely on efficient and reliable transportation to bring their products to market, both domestically and internationally. However, tariffs and regulatory challenges put an immense strain on these sectors, impacting Saskatchewan’s economic growth and global competitiveness.
To protect our province’s industries and maintain a strong supply chain, we need immediate action to secure transportation networks both within Saskatchewan and across Canada. Strengthened border security and a comprehensive plan to address unethical practices and improve federal oversight are essential to sustaining our industry and ensuring a prosperous future for all.
