Commercial Driver Instructor Training

The Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) is pleased to partner with SGI in delivering the Commercial Driver Instructor Training Course.

Program Overview

Our goal is to enhance the quality of Saskatchewan’s Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) by strengthening the skills of those teaching it. This ultimately supports a stronger commercial driver training instructor, resulting in the creation of better-qualified Class 1 Drivers.

Admission Requirements

The following requirements must be completed and submitted to the Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) prior to the start of the three-day Instructional Design and Delivery (IDD) course:

  1. Application form
  2. Licence requirements
  3. Satisfactory driving record
  4. Commercial driving experience and employment history
  5. Education requirements
  6. Criminal record check
  7. English Proficiency
  8. Examination process

Apprentice Instructor Process

You must successfully complete the following to obtain apprentice instructor certification status:

  1. SGI Training with a senior instructor at the employing driver training school
  2. STA Instructional Design and Delivery (IDD) course
  3. SGI assessment
  4. Apprentice instructor certification

Senior Instructor Process

Within 12 months of obtaining an apprentice certification status, the instructor must successfully complete the following to obtain a senior instructor certification status:

  1. STA’s Commercial Driver Instructor Preparation Course
  2. Commercial driving instructional techniques
  3. SGI assessment
  4. Senior instructor certification

Courses

STA provides two courses in partnership with SGI to complete their Commercial Driver Instructor Training program.

Instructional Design and Delivery (IDD)

This is an essential course for entry-level and intermediate instructors to enhance their existing skills, learn new techniques, and bring increased values to their training programs.

3 Days

Commercial Driver Instructor Training

Drivers seeking a Class 1 commercial licence must first complete Saskatchewan’s entry-level training (CDIT). This course is provided to Instructors of the CDIT program.

All the Admission Requirements below need to be submitted with the application.

  • A copy of a valid unrestricted Canadian or US Class 1A license and have held the license for 3 years immediately preceding the date of application.
  • Proof of 5 years, 500,000 km or 6,000 hours of Class 1A driving experience in North America in the past 10 years. Please provide a detailed resume with a type of equipment operated.
  • Proof of a satisfactory driving record. Please provide a commercial driver’s abstract for the past 10 years.
  • Provide proof of grade 10 or equivalent.
  • Provide proof of English language requirements. Level 4 and above
  • Proof of a satisfactory criminal record check dated within 30 days prior to application.

Release Waiver for Permission to Discuss Application and Results with Employer

The signature below provides authorization for SGI Driver Education and Training and the Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) to:

  • Discuss and review my application information and test results with my employer for the purpose of this
    application;
  • Discuss my training results directly with my employer immediately following the completion of the course and/or assessment for the purpose of completing the instructor certification process;
  • Allow SGI to store and use my application information for the purposes of processing and evaluating my application;
  • Share and discuss my application information with both SGI and STArepresentatives, including direct communication with me as the applicant, to support the certification process and ensure compliance with The Driver Training Regulations, 2011..
