How AI is Being Used in Trucking
Mar 06, 2026
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more common in the trucking industry, especially when it comes to safety and efficiency.
One of the biggest ways AI is being used today is through video-based safety systems, often called dash cameras. These systems automatically detect and record safety events while a truck is on the road. Many vendors offer systems that rely entirely on AI to identify risky situations.
However, some companies are using a combination of artificial intelligence and human intelligence. For example, solutions from Omnitracs and Solera can include “managed services,” where trained experts review video footage after an event is captured. This helps determine whether the situation is a serious safety concern that requires driver coaching or simply a minor event that doesn’t need follow-up. Having a human review the footage can reduce unnecessary alerts and provide more meaningful feedback for drivers.
AI is also used in safety technology built directly into trucks through systems known as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These tools can help detect and warn drivers about risks such as hard braking, aggressive lane changes, swerving, tailgating, and potential roll stability issues. Some of these alerts come from camera systems, while others are built directly into the truck by the manufacturer.
Another growing use of AI is route optimization. For trucking companies that make multiple pickups and deliveries each day, AI can analyze delivery locations, traffic, weather, and road conditions to determine the most efficient route. This can help fleets save time, reduce fuel use, and complete more deliveries.
