STA Opposes Regina City Council Proposal to Remove 9th Avenue North as Truck Route
October 8, 2020
The Saskatchewan Trucking Association is aware of, and has been in close contact with important stakeholders regarding a proposal the City of Regina is considering to ban commercial trucks on 9th Avenue North from the Regina Bypass to Courtney Street.
The Saskatchewan Trucking Association firmly opposes having 9th Avenue North eliminated as a commercial trucking route. Removing commercial truck access on this portion of 9th Aveune North will increase travel time, increase carbon emissions, increase fuel consumption, and increase overall operational costs for many businesses reliant on essential goods.
Saskatchewan Trucking Association Member, Loblaws Ltd, Manager of Transport, Travis Beattie shared with us:
If this section of road were to be deemed a non-truck route, we would need to run our trucks up the Bypass to Hwy 11 and back in down Pasqua St, adding approximately 32 km per round trip. Once you factor in the 6 stores and multiple deliveries per day, this becomes a significant impact.
In addition, since the City of Regina closed Dewdney Avenue, this section of 9th Avenue North from the Bypass is the only logical option to access the NW part of Regina. Such a change would also result in a lack of future business opportunities for new business from the Global Transportation Hub due to increased fuel and environmental costs.
Susan Ewart, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association wants the Regina public to know:
Trucking plays a critical role within our province and this city and removing the commercial truck access on 9th Avenue north will create increased operational costs for carriers who use and access businesses at the Global Transportation Hub. The use of 9th Avenue North is a logical and efficient route for the movement of goods to and from this area of the city and we do not support the motion to remove 9th Avenue North as a commercial truck access.
