2024 Task Force Meeting on Vehicle Weights and Dimensions Review
Jan 20, 2025
The 2024 Task Force Meeting on Vehicle Weights and Dimensions focused on key developments in transportation policy, infrastructure, and safety across Canada. The meeting facilitated discussions on regulatory updates, innovations, and collaborative initiatives aimed at improving freight movement, road safety, and the transition to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). Below is a summary of significant territorial updates and future outlooks.
British Columbia (BC)
In 2024, BC made strides with the expansion of 100T and 125T routes, accommodating heavier vehicles. Efforts to address truck parking shortages are underway, with new facilities being developed. BC is also introducing all-terrain cranes to support heavy haul operations. Looking forward, BC plans to focus on ZEV integration, particularly through the OnRouteBC program, which will enhance charging infrastructure and incentivize the adoption of ZEVs. Key projects include improvements to the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor, renewable energy initiatives, and highway recovery efforts.
Alberta
Alberta has restructured its Traffic Safety Services Division to improve safety and permitting efficiency. The modernization of the TRAVIS Permitting and Routing system will streamline the processing of commercial vehicle permits. Pilot programs will also explore the viability of 60’ A-train trailers, steer axle trailers, and projects under the Alberta Zero Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC). Alberta continues expanding its high load corridor and is progressing with all-terrain crane projects to improve heavy haul capabilities.
Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan has committed to improving 10,000 kilometers of highways, enhancing trade and transportation efficiency. Updates to load security and trip inspection regulations were introduced, and a review of vehicle weights and dimensions is anticipated. The province is also working on improvements to truck parking, rest areas, and the Highway Hotline. Additionally, Saskatchewan is collaborating on new technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve safety in the trucking sector.
Manitoba
Manitoba’s transportation priorities include the National Economic Trade Corridor Strategy, which focuses on twinning the TransCanada Highway. The province is also working with the Western Vehicle Weights and Dimensions Working Group on the Long Combination Vehicle MOU and improving the Perimeter Freeway for safety and efficiency.
Ontario
Ontario’s regulatory updates include amendments to the Safe, Productive, and Infrastructure Friendly (SPIF) program and the introduction of the Extended Semitrailer Program, which allows longer semitrailers on specific routes. The Extended Stinger-Steer Auto Carrier (ESSAC) and Heavy Tow Truck programs were also launched to enhance freight and recovery operations across the province.
Quebec
Quebec is preparing for regulatory updates in 2025 regarding vehicle weight limits and special road train permits. Construction on Highway 185 will provide a continuous divided highway for Long Combination Vehicle operations. Additionally, Quebec is piloting a wide-wing snow clearing vehicle and improving rest areas and safety for vulnerable road users.
P.E.I. and Newfoundland & Labrador
P.E.I. completed vehicle weight and dimension amendments in 2023, and mandatory entry-level training was introduced in 2024. Newfoundland and Labrador updated its MOU amendments and implemented a weigh scale bypass program. Pilot projects, including additional weight for B-trains, are ongoing.
Transport Canada
At the federal level, Transport Canada is advancing the Zero Emission Trucking Program and other initiatives to reduce emissions from medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. The ecoTechnology for Vehicles Program and pilot projects are facilitating the testing of ZEV technologies.
Conclusion
The 2024 meeting showcased coordinated efforts across provinces and territories to enhance transportation safety, infrastructure, and sustainability. The focus on vehicle weights, emissions reduction, and infrastructure improvements is setting the stage for a safer and more efficient transportation network in Canada.
