Driving Forward - The Road Ahead for 2025

Jan 08, 2025

Dear Members, As we embark on 2025, I am filled with optimism and pride in the work we have accomplished together. The Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) continues to champion the interests of our members and the broader trucking industry. Guided by our Strategic Plan and the priorities identified by the Board of Directors, we aim to build on our momentum and tackle the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Driving Forward - The Road Ahead for 2025

Key Files for 2025

Driver Inc.
Our advocacy against the misclassification of employees under Driver Inc. remains a top priority. We will continue to work with provincial ministries, including the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training, Labour Relations, and Workplace Safety (LRWS &WCB), Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), and SGI to ensure proper oversight and enforcement. The STA is part of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, and we will continue to work with the Federal Government for full enforcement and action.

Immigration & Career Training
The trucking industry thrives on a skilled and diverse workforce. We will deepen our engagement with the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training (ICT) to streamline processes and enhance recruitment pathways under programs like the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP). This includes advocating for further protections against labor abuse and fraud, in line with The Immigration Services Act.

WCB Oversight
We aim to strengthen our partnership with the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) to ensure fair practices and improved safety outcomes. By addressing reporting anomalies and supporting workplace audits, we will drive positive change for our members.

SGI Collaboration
Our work with Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) will focus on:

  • Expanding National Safety Code (NSC) training for new and conditional carriers.
  • Supporting regulatory improvements and oversight of Chameleon Carriers
  • Advocating for accessible MELT funding to provide financial support for new entrants to the industry.
  • Oversight of Driver Training schools and the MELT curriculum

Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure (MoHI)
The STA will continue to engage with MoHI on a range of critical infrastructure and regulatory issues, including:

  • Enhanced infrastructure support for pullouts, rest stops, and weigh scales.
  • Increasing allowable weights for wide-based single tires on secondary highways.
  • Streamlining Long Combination Vehicle (LCV) permit qualifications and conditions.

Marked Diesel
We will work with Finance and relevant ministries to resolve challenges related to the use of marked diesel in reefer trailers, ensuring fair practices and regulatory clarity.

Engaging LRWS
Engaging with the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety will focus on fostering a safe and equitable working environment. We aim to establish stronger lines of communication to support fair labor practices and address workplace concerns within the industry.
