Is This the Start of a New Trend? Buyers Are Asking About Safety Training—Here’s Why That Matters
Jun 26, 2025
Over the past month or so, we've started to notice something that’s worth sharing—especially if you’re in the trucking business. A few phone calls turned into more phone calls, and a pattern started to emerge: industry folks are telling us that their clients—the ones buying carrier services—have started asking for proof of safety training. Not just the basics, but specifically Cargo Securement and Fall Protection for drivers.

Now, if you’ve worked in construction or heavy construction, this probably feels familiar. That sector saw a shift over a decade ago when buyers of construction services began expecting safety to be part of the deal. And why wouldn’t they? Working with safe companies helps reduce downtime, manage risk, protect reputation, and even lower premiums.
The trucking industry seems to be heading in the same direction.
Here in Saskatchewan, falls are actually the second most common injury in trucking—just behind lifting injuries. And while these can seem like “just part of the job,” they’re often preventable with the right training, some practical policies, and a solid safety management system in place.
You might be thinking, “But we already have compliance standards and safety ratings—aren’t those enough?” They’re incredibly important, no question. Your safety rating is tied to your NSC compliance, which covers essentials like cargo securement, hours of service, and vehicle maintenance. It’s all about ensuring consistency on the road and keeping everyone safer.
But there’s another layer that often gets overlooked: Occupational Health and Safety. It’s legislated across Canada, and it covers things like fall protection, ergonomics, and contact with objects (which happens to be the third most common injury in trucking). These aren’t always front and center in transportation compliance, so it’s up to us to fill in those gaps.
The upside? Investing in training and safety systems could save you money in WCB premiums, help you win contracts, and build a reputation as a carrier that puts safety first. That’s something clients are paying attention to.
If you want to get ahead of the curve, we’ve got your back. The STA offers Fall Protection for Drivers and a variety of Cargo Securement courses. And if you really want to show clients you’re serious, consider developing a full safety management system and getting COR certified. It’s a great way to prove you’re a safe, responsible company to do business with.
Trends come and go—but when it comes to safety, this one looks like it’s here to stay.
