Trucking Industry Certificate of Recognition
The Certificate of Recognition training is designed to help an employer understand and commit to health and safety programs, while also allowing a designated full-time employee to become the company’s internal auditor.
The Ministry of Highways has reviewed and approved the Saskatchewan Trucking Association's Certificate of Recognition Program and has updated its standard specification to approve the Saskatchewan Trucking Association as a Certifying Body.
Trucking Industry Certificate of Recognition
A Certificate of Recognition (CoR) is awarded to employers who develop health and safety programs that meet standards established by the Government of Saskatchewan.
In conjunction with the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and Mission Zero, the Saskatchewan Trucking Association is working to implement a trucking industry-specific Certificate of Recognition program within the province.
The Principles of Certificate of Recognition:
- Culture of Safety
- Risk Assessment
- Hazard Control
- Loss Prevention
- Incident Investigations
CoR is an optional program that an organization chooses to invest in, to increase workplace safety. Due to this, there are no punitive results arising from poor audit performance.
What’s involved in Certification?
Mandatory courses that must be completed (in order of completion) include:
- Health and Safety System Building | 3 days
- Fundamentals of Auditing | 2 days
- CoR Auditor | 2 days
Upon successful completion of the required training, a certification audit is performed by an STA-approved external Auditor. After obtaining a successful internal audit, the employer is issued the Trucking Specific Certificate of Recognition. The employer is required to conduct and complete annual internal audits for each of the next two years, as well as an external audit in year three, to maintain the Certificate of Recognition.
Benefits of Becoming Certified
- Demonstrated development of a health and safety management system.
- An understanding of the audit process, with audit criteria connecting companies to a nationwide network of health and safety excellence.
- Firms that are registered in the Certificate of Recognition program may qualify ahead of others for certain jobs.
- Reduction in workplace injuries and illnesses.
See How Reduced Injury Claims Help Lower WCB Premiums
WCB rates for trucking companies vary based on claim history. The more injury claims you make, the higher your rates. Obtaining a Certificate of Recognition is one way to lower your costs, as this training helps you reduce job-related injuries. In fact, depending on the size of your payroll, the cost of certification can be paid for quickly with your WCB savings.
