Driver of the Month

Daryl Bay | December 2024

Pilot Flying J

Congratulations to Daryl Bay with Pilot Flying J who is the STA Professional Driver of the Month for December 2024!

Daryl started trucking in 1971 at age 16 in small freight trucks around Regina. At 18, he started driving semi trucks, he says “My road test for the class 1 license was in a pickup truck, makes me laugh now” he spent a little while on freight trucks and flat decks then, in 1974, he got a job hauling fuel. "I knew then that was what I wanted to do." He has been hauling fuel ever since making a total of fifty years hauling fuel. He has trucked fuel from Regina out as far as North Bay, Ontario and the other way regular runs to Fort Nelson, Fort St John, and Kamloops, southern B.C.

In his early years the fuel business used to get quiet around Christmas time so, he and a buddy would run team on mail runs until the fuel picked up again. The mail was typically Vancouver to Winnipeg but they did do the odd trip to Toronto. In his words “I have enjoyed my life on the road but, it comes with one regret that it, while doing this I did not see a lot of my children as they grew up, we were all in the same position back then, the pay was good but the life was hard” when asked about trucks and his experience “I have driven almost everything there was but, in all my life have never driven a Peterbilt truck, never driven a five/four transmission either. Of all the trucks I have driven I think my favorite one is the Volvo. So quiet and comfortable, I really appreciate the automatic transmission and the added safety features built into the truck. Driving this is nowhere near the same as driving back in the seventies”

Daryl started with Pilot Flying J in January of 2009 making it fifteen years this year. He started with Pilot Flying J as a driver then around 2012 he became lead driver and has been ever since. He has worked a five-day shift since starting hauling approximately 12 loads per five-day shift. Averaging 625,000 liters weekly or, 2.5 million liters monthly. Working an average of 49 weeks per year, this would equate to, over 30 million litres or, 6,700,000 gallons yearly. Over his career with Pilot Flying J, an estimated 100,000,000 gallons were hauled. Being based in Regina at least 50% of these gallons were pump deliveries. He has never had an at-fault incident relating to a delivery, no spills, no cross drops anything.

Daryl is a highly valued team member at Pilot Flying J, admired for his mentorship and extensive experience. The team is truly grateful to have him!
